VIP Sports Camp

Filed under: Advocate, College — admin @ 10:10 pm

I volunteered as a councilor at a summer sports camp for blind and visually impaired athletes. I was looking for an experience to familiarize myself with just another disability that affects so many individuals, but what I got was an experience that taught me so much about the blind and visually impaired community, and just an experience working with kids in general.

The camp is a five day camp for kids to participate in all sorts of sporting events like track, fishing, rock climbing, etc, as well as meet other kids and even some staff with visual impairments.

It was incredible, however overseeing a group of eight 14 year old boys and socializing with 45+ other kids for five days was pretty tiring!

special olympics

Through school I have become a Special Olympics gymnastics coach. Going to Penn State for the state championships was my first time being on my own as the county’s head coach. It was so stressful and hectic, but between the two, very rewarding and interestingly fun.

professor of the year

After a discussion in English about conflicting opinions between teachers and students, and how some teachers grade with bias, my professor shared a story which resulted in this comment written at the end of his paper:

“…I find you morally repugnant.”
-Professor Brown, English Dept.

This student still got a B after writing about a disgraceful white supremacy-esque topic, but I think my professor handled it nicely.

Goal Ball

Filed under: Advocate, College — admin @ 9:34 pm

Today I had my first experience with goal ball. It is a sport for the blind and visually impaired. It was probably the coolest thing I’ve seen when it comes to sports. I volunteered to help the team’s practice and then I went back to play for myself with other college and grad students. There is a tournament in two weeks that I want to get a team together for.

Basically you are blindfolded by goggles covered in electrical tape. Then you roll a ball with bells in it and you listen for it and dive in the direction you think it is to block it from going over the goal line. It is intense and painful but a whole lot of fun!

I have friends! A successful day in the sun with some fun people, and all it took was a phone and a frisbee.
